Lesson Five - English words created from Greek ones, and more cognates.

The last exercise will be the fun stuff - more Bible translation!

A: Make sure you are writing down all the words in a personal dictionary to help with later translation. Write these into a dictionary and then use the following words in part B.

New alphabet letter!
In Greek an English the sound 'ei' (like in 'eight'- pronounced 'ay'), is the same. In Greek however as . But in Greek the letter has the same 'ay' sound.

C: Match the Greek word with its meaning. Find the Greek word in the column two that reminds you of an English word in the column one by sounding them out. Write out the answers on on paper and add the Greek words to your dictionary.

.......ac. Idol, false god. Combined with the Greek word for worship, 'latreia,' you get the word meaning idolaty - 'eidwlolatreia'
.......ad. One who practices magic. The term for the wise men visiting baby Jesus is a re-spelling of this into the English 'Magi.'

E. Finally, translate the Greek words in the verses and check them using a Bible and your dictionary. Sound out any new words and try to guess what they are before checking them. It is interesting to compare different translations when checking it to see what each says. Disregard unfamiliar endings and simply write the meaning of the main part of the Greek word. Sometimes the word order may be different.
